Tragic Loss at Coast General Hospital Due to Oxygen Supply Disruption
On April 3, 2025, a critical failure in the oxygen supply at Mombasa’s Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital led to the deaths of at least three patients. Among the deceased were 81-year-old Kimanzi Mwangi, Mariam Chai, and 45-year-old Tito Mutua. This incident has sparked outrage among the victims’ families, who are demanding accountability from the hospital’s management. According to Alfred Kimanzi, the son of the late Kimanzi Mwangi, the family had spent a cheerful afternoon with their father. As they prepared to leave around 6 p.m., the oxygen supply was suddenly interrupted, leaving patients gasping for air. Alfred recounted their desperate pleas for medical assistance, stating, “We watched helplessly as my father struggled to breathe. I pleaded with the nurses to call a doctor, but no one responded.” The affected wards included Wards 5, 6, and the Children’s Ward. Families of the victims have labeled the incident as gross negligence. John Mutua, a relative of one of the deceased, emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting, “This is manslaughter. How could they interfere with the oxygen supply, knowing very well that patients’ lives depended on it?” In the aftermath, hospital staff were reportedly overwhelmed and unresponsive to the families’ concerns. Kennedy Mwilo, a relative of Tito Mutua, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the hospital’s management, noting that no official had addressed them or acknowledged the incident. This tragedy underscores the critical importance of reliable oxygen supply systems in healthcare facilities. It also highlights the need for stringent protocols to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, the affected families and the public await a comprehensive explanation and accountability from the hospital administration.
