In a surprising move that has raised eyebrows internationally, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently presented a luxurious car to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the Russian-made vehicle, an Aurus from the luxury automaker founded in 2018, was delivered on Sunday by a Russian delegation.
Kim’s sister and senior Pyongyang official, Kim Yo Jong, expressed gratitude on behalf of her brother, stating that “the gift serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders of (North Korea) and Russia,” according to KCNA.
While the diplomatic gesture may appear benign on the surface, US intelligence officials are growing increasingly concerned about the long-term implications of the deepening strategic partnership between North Korea and Russia. Multiple officials familiar with the latest intelligence have informed CNN that this alliance has triggered worries in the United States.
Recent events have further fueled these concerns, as Russia has been reportedly firing North Korean-supplied short-range ballistic missiles at Ukrainian targets in the past few weeks. Simultaneously, US officials fear that North Korea’s strengthened ties with Russia could potentially lead to a reduction in China’s influence over the reclusive state. This, in turn, could remove what some consider a crucial restraint on Pyongyang’s nuclear testing program.
